Smartforests Canada
A network of monitoring plots for forest management under environmental change.
Establish and coordinate a network of high precision monitoring plots across a 4400 km gradient of environmental and forest conditions.
Examine the effects of global changes on complex above- and below-ground forest dynamics and resilience.
Develop next generation forest growth models and inform policy makers on best forest management and adaptation strategies.
A tree-centred approach.
Detailed tree ecophysiological observations are collected at the cell- and whole plant-level.
Plant ecophysiological insights and tree-level process understanding are upscaled to the forest stand level using information on stand demography and airborne imaging.
Findings at the forest stand level are synthesised across the Smartforests network of sites to better understand and model forest structure and function, health and resilience to environmental change and provide Canada-wide guidance for forest management and policy making.
